Why Visit Rwanda?
Rwanda offers Africa’s most premium gorilla trekking experience — and one of the continent’s most emotionally layered journeys. The mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park are the centrepiece: 12 habituated families available to permit-holding visitors, with world-class lodge infrastructure immediately adjacent to the park.
But Rwanda is far more than gorillas. The Kigali Genocide Memorial, documenting the 1994 genocide that killed 800,000 people in 100 days and Rwanda’s extraordinary recovery — from traumatised, shattered nation to arguably Africa’s most progressive, well-governed country — is one of the most extraordinary stories of the 20th century. A visit to the Kigali Memorial is not easy, but it is among the most important things a visitor to Africa can do.
Geography & Climate
Rwanda is a tiny country of 26,338 km² in the heart of Africa — the most densely populated nation on the continent. Almost entirely hilly — rolling green hills covered in terraced agriculture. The western volcanic zone — the Virunga Massif reaching 4,507m — contains Volcanoes National Park. Rwanda receives year-round rainfall — lush, green, and remarkably beautiful. “Land of a Thousand Hills” is accurate.
Top Places to Visit in Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park
Protects Rwanda’s sector of the Virunga Massif — a chain of dormant volcanoes on the Rwanda-Uganda-DRC tri-border. Home to approximately 500 mountain gorillas. Twelve gorilla families are habituated for tourism — maximum 8 trekkers per family per day. Rwanda Development Board (RDB) manages permits at $1,500 per person. The experience: an early morning briefing, then 30 minutes to 3+ hours of forest trekking before the guide signals: the gorillas are ahead. The next hour belongs entirely to the gorilla family.
Kigali Genocide Memorial
The most important historical site in East Africa — a deeply moving, professionally presented documentation of the 1994 genocide that killed between 800,000 and 1,000,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus in 100 days. The memorial contains mass graves of 250,000 victims. The permanent exhibition presents the genocide’s history, the international community’s failure to intervene, and Rwanda’s extraordinary journey of justice and reconciliation.
Nyungwe Forest National Park
Rwanda’s southwestern corner: one of Central Africa’s largest mountain rainforests — 1,019 km² with 13 primate species including chimpanzees, Angolan colobus, and L’Hoest’s monkeys. The Nyungwe canopy walk — a suspension bridge 70m above the forest floor — is one of East Africa’s most extraordinary single experiences.
Lake Kivu
Rwanda’s western border with the DRC — a deep highland lake of exceptional beauty at 1,460m elevation. The lakeside towns of Gisenyi and Kibuye have a relaxed beach resort atmosphere. Island excursions, kayaking, and swimming.

Best Time to Visit Rwanda
June–September (Long Dry Season — Best): Peak season. Drier trails, more comfortable trekking. Book gorilla permits 3–6 months ahead.
December–February (Short Dry Season): Excellent conditions, slightly fewer tourists than June–September. Good value for lodges.
March–May and October–November (Rainy): Heavier rain makes trekking muddier. Gorillas are in the forest year-round — sightings equally reliable.
Visa & Entry Requirements
Rwanda grants visa on arrival for most nationalities — free for African Union passport holders, $30 for some others. East African Community Tourist Visa ($100, covers Rwanda + Uganda + Kenya). Gorilla permit ($1,500 USD) booked separately through Rwanda Development Board — VHA handles all bookings.
Safety & Security
Rwanda is arguably Africa’s safest country for international visitors — well-governed, extremely low crime. Kigali is consistently cited as Africa’s cleanest and safest capital. Plastic bags are banned throughout the country.
Getting There — Flights & Transport
Fly to Kigali International Airport (KGL). RwandAir has an excellent African network and connects to European cities. Musanze (Ruhengeri) — gateway for Volcanoes NP — is 2.5 hours from Kigali by road.
Accommodation
Volcanoes NP (ultra-luxury): Singita Kwitonda Lodge, One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, Bisate Lodge (Wilderness). Mid-range: Virunga Lodge (extraordinary crater lake views), Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge. Kigali: Kigali Serena Hotel, Radisson Blu.
Food & Cuisine
Rwandan cuisine: isombe (cassava leaves with peanuts), ubugali (cassava/maize porridge), brochettes (grilled skewered meat), and freshwater fish from Lake Kivu. Kigali’s restaurant scene has developed rapidly — excellent Ethiopian, Indian, and international options.
Culture & Local Customs
Rwanda’s cultural recovery from the 1994 genocide is one of the most remarkable stories in recent history. Gacaca courts (community justice tribunals) processed over 1.9 million genocide cases. Umuganda (compulsory community work the last Saturday of each month) is a remarkable expression of collective civic responsibility. Rwandans speak openly and thoughtfully about the genocide’s legacy.
Photography Guide
Rwanda’s gorilla photography benefits from slightly drier forest than Bwindi — better light penetration. Golden monkeys (endemic blue/gold colouring against green bamboo forest) are among Africa’s most photogenic and overlooked subjects. Kigali: the memorial (photography respectful and permitted in exhibition areas), rooftop views across the city.
Packing Guide
- Waterproof hiking boots (mandatory — trails can be very muddy)
- Long trousers and long sleeves (mandatory for gorilla encounter)
- Lightweight rain jacket
- Gardening gloves (for gripping vegetation on steep slopes)
- Gaiters (for muddy Volcanoes NP trails)
- NOTE: No plastic bags in Rwanda — remove all from luggage before arrival

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a Rwanda gorilla trekking permit?
Rwanda Development Board (RDB) gorilla permits cost $1,500 USD per person per trek. VHA handles all bookings — book 3–6 months ahead.
Why is Rwanda’s gorilla permit more expensive than Uganda’s?
Rwanda’s $1,500 permit (vs Uganda’s $800) reflects higher conservation investment and premium infrastructure. The gorilla experience itself is comparable. Rwanda’s shorter average trek times and luxury lodge options make it premium-positioned.
Should I visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial?
Yes — unhesitatingly. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is one of Africa’s most important historical sites and essential for understanding Rwanda and its extraordinary recovery. It is not comfortable. It is profoundly important.
