Why Visit Burundi?
Burundi — “the Heart of Africa” — is East Africa’s most overlooked destination and one of its most rewarding for the independent-minded traveller. A small, landlocked country on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, the world’s second-deepest lake, Burundi offers chimpanzee trekking, extraordinary cultural heritage, and the simple pleasure of swimming in one of the world’s most beautiful and least-crowded lakefront settings.
Kibira National Park in the northwest contains one of Central Africa’s largest highland rainforests — 800 chimpanzees, 600 colobus monkeys, and 600 bird species. Lake Tanganyika’s crystal-clear water (visibility to 40m in parts) and 250+ endemic fish species make it one of the world’s great freshwater ecosystems. And the Gishora drum ceremonies — the royal drumming tradition inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list — are among East Africa’s most extraordinary cultural experiences.
Geography & Climate
Burundi occupies 27,830 km² in Central Africa. The Congo-Nile ridge runs north to south through the country — all water west flows to the Congo, all water east to the Nile. Lake Tanganyika sits at 772m elevation on the western border. June–September and December–January are dry seasons — best for Kibira trekking and lake activities.
Top Places to Visit in Burundi
Lake Tanganyika
The world’s longest freshwater lake (673km), second-deepest (1,470m), and home to 250+ endemic fish species. Crystal-clear water with visibility to 40m — swimming in Lake Tanganyika is an extraordinary experience. The Bujumbura waterfront, with its lakeside restaurants and sunset views, is one of Central Africa’s most beautiful urban scenes.
Kibira National Park
One of Central Africa’s largest remaining montane rainforests — 40,000 hectares at 1,600–2,670m. The park contains 800 chimpanzees (habituated groups available for tracking), 600 colobus monkeys, golden monkey, L’Hoest’s monkey, and 600+ bird species. Less visited than Uganda’s Kibale — a significant advantage for authentic encounters without crowds.
Gishora Drum Sanctuary
The Gishora Royal Drum Sanctuary is home to the Imboneshero — Burundi’s royal drummers. The ceremony, featuring 10–20 drummers performing in precise synchrony on enormous royal drums, is one of East Africa’s most extraordinary cultural performances. UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2014.
Source of the Nile — Southern Tributary
Near Rutovu in southern Burundi, a spring marks the southernmost source of the Nile — the most distant tributary of the world’s longest river. Standing at the potential starting point of the Nile’s 6,650km journey to the Mediterranean is compelling.

Visa & Entry Requirements
Burundi visa on arrival available at Bujumbura airport for most nationalities. East African Community Tourist Visa ($100) valid for Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya. VHA assists with all visa requirements.
Safety & Security
Burundi has experienced political instability — check current FCO/State Dept advisories before travel. The situation has generally improved since 2020. Tourist areas (Bujumbura, Lake Tanganyika, Kibira) are generally safe with an experienced operator. VHA monitors the situation continuously.
Getting There — Flights & Transport
Fly to Bujumbura International Airport (BJM) via Nairobi, Kigali, or Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, RwandAir). Bujumbura is the practical travel hub — Kibira is 3 hours north, Gitega is 1.5 hours east.
Accommodation
Bujumbura: Club du Lac Tanganyika (lakefront, VHA preferred), Botanika Hotel (boutique, excellent restaurant). Limited options in upcountry areas — VHA uses best available guesthouses for Kibira access.
Food & Cuisine
Burundian cuisine: ugali, isombe (cassava leaves), brochettes (grilled meat skewers), and freshwater fish from Lake Tanganyika (capitaine/Nile perch, tilapia). Banana beer (urwarwa) is a traditional ceremonial drink. Bujumbura’s lakefront restaurants serve fresh Tanganyika fish with extraordinary views.
Culture & Local Customs
Burundian culture is centred on the mwami (king) tradition and the extraordinary royal drum ceremony — the Imboneshero represent one of Africa’s most powerful cultural traditions. The warmth and hospitality of Burundians toward international visitors is genuine and remarkable given the country’s recent history.
