Why Visit Eritrea?

Eritrea is one of Africa’s most extraordinary and misunderstood destinations — a country that rewards the persistent, curious traveller with experiences unavailable anywhere else on the continent. Asmara, the capital at 2,300m elevation, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017 for its extraordinary intact collection of Italian Modernist architecture — Art Deco, Futurist, Rationalist, and Novecento buildings constructed in the 1930s that survive virtually unchanged.

Walking Asmara’s Liberation Avenue at dusk — past the 1937 Cinema Impero, the extraordinary 1938 Fiat Tagliero Building with its aviation-inspired cantilevered roof, and dozens of immaculate Italian colonial buildings repurposed as Eritrean coffee houses — is one of Africa’s most extraordinary urban experiences. The city has been called “Africa’s Rome,” and the quality and density of early-20th century Italian Modernist architecture here exceeds anything surviving in Italy itself.

Geography & Climate

Eritrea is a narrow country of 121,320 km² on the Horn of Africa. The central highland plateau at 2,000–3,000m contains Asmara; the eastern escarpment descends dramatically to the Red Sea coastal plain at Massawa in just 70km. Asmara: pleasant 15–25°C year-round. Massawa: 30–40°C, up to 45°C+ in summer. Best travel: October–April.

Top Places to Visit in Eritrea

Asmara — UNESCO Art Deco Capital

  • Cinema Impero (1937): Most beautiful Art Deco cinema in Africa — sweeping curved facade with neon-lit tower, still operational.
  • Fiat Tagliero Building (1938): Extraordinary Futurist architecture — a petrol station resembling an aircraft with 30-metre cantilevered roof wings, no supporting columns.
  • Liberation Avenue cafes: Eritreans inherited Italy’s espresso culture entirely. Excellent macchiato in an atmosphere unchanged since 1960.
  • Medebar Recycling Market: Raw materials hand-crafted into products on the spot. One of Africa’s most extraordinary markets.
  • Tank Graveyard: Rusting Ethiopian military hardware from Eritrea’s independence war — one of Africa’s most haunting historical sites.

Massawa — Ancient Red Sea Port

The drive from Asmara to Massawa descends 2,300m in 1 hour through the eastern escarpment — one of East Africa’s most dramatic road journeys. Massawa layers Ottoman coral buildings (16th century), Italian colonial architecture (1900s–1930s), and war damage left partly un-repaired as memorial.

Keren — Highland Market Town

90km northwest of Asmara. One of the Horn’s finest Monday camel markets — hundreds of camels traded in complete authenticity. WWII Battle of Keren site; British and Italian war cemeteries maintained immaculately.

Best Time to Visit Eritrea

October–April: Asmara pleasant year-round (15–25°C). Massawa bearable (28–35°C). Avoid: Massawa June–August (40–45°C+). Eritrean Independence Day (May 24) — celebrations across Asmara.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Visa required in advance from nearest Eritrean embassy. Visit Horn of Africa provides invitation letters and full application assistance — allow 2–4 weeks. Do not declare journalistic intent.

Safety & Security

Eritrea is politically controlled but not conventionally dangerous — crime and personal safety risks for tourists are very low. Visitors must travel with licensed guides and observe strict photography rules (no government buildings, military sites without permission). VHA briefs all clients thoroughly before departure.

Getting There — Flights & Transport

Fly to Asmara International Airport (ASM). Eritrean Airlines from Cairo, Dubai, Frankfurt, Nairobi. Ethiopian Airlines also serves Asmara. All excursions require licensed guide vehicle. Asmara–Massawa sealed road is one of Africa’s great drives.

Accommodation

Asmara: Hotel Inter-Continental Asmara (luxury, VHA preferred), Albergo Italia (historic colonial), Sunshine Hotel (mid-range). Massawa: Dahlak Hotel (sea view). Book well in advance through VHA.

Food & Cuisine

Eritrean cuisine combines Ethiopian injera tradition with 80+ years of Italian colonial influence — pasta, pizza, and espresso are genuinely embedded in daily life. Zigni (spiced beef stew) on injera, fresh Red Sea fish in Massawa (lobster, grouper), and the extraordinary Asmara espresso tradition are highlights. Suwa (sorghum beer) is the traditional drink.

Culture & Local Customs

Two main religious communities — Tigrinya-speaking Christians and Muslims — coexist with remarkable amicability. Italian cultural influence is deep: the passeggiata (evening stroll) is a real Asmara institution. Photography: always ask permission; accept refusals graciously. Eritreans are warm and welcoming to respectful visitors.

Photography Guide

Asmara is a street photographer’s dream. Key restriction: Never photograph government buildings, military infrastructure, or official vehicles. Fiat Tagliero at dawn (before 7am) provides extraordinary light. Massawa at dusk when Ottoman coral buildings glow gold. Medebar market — dynamic and photogenic with permission.

Packing Guide

  • Smart casual clothing — Asmara has sophisticated dress culture
  • Layer for Asmara evenings — cool year-round at 2,300m
  • Light cotton for Massawa heat
  • Very conservative photography approach — ask before every shot
  • USD cash — limited ATMs, Nakfa not exchangeable abroad
  • Offline maps — limited data connectivity
  • Italian CEE 7/11 plug adaptor
