Best Time to Visit Socotra Island — Month by Month Guide
Socotra Island has one of the most dramatic seasonal climates of any destination on earth — the Indian Ocean monsoon effectively closes the island to visitors for four months of the year, making timing absolutely critical for anyone planning a Socotra trip.
The Simple Answer
Visit October to May. Avoid June to September.
Month by Month Breakdown
October–November
The monsoon clears by mid-October. Early season — skies are dramatic, vegetation is still lush from the rains, fewer visitors. Flight connections can be irregular in October. By November, Socotra is fully open and excellent.
December–February
Peak season. Best weather, most reliable flights, most tour operators active. Book well in advance — permits and accommodation fill up. Temperatures pleasant (20–28°C).
March–April
Excellent conditions continue. Slightly fewer visitors than December–February. Good value period. Dragon’s Blood Trees looking spectacular.
May
Late season. Winds can pick up. Still visitable but monitor conditions. Some operators begin reducing operations.
June–September
Do not visit. The Khareef (southwest monsoon) closes Socotra’s airport and makes sea access impossible. The island is effectively inaccessible to tourists. Any operator claiming to offer Socotra tours during this period should be treated with extreme caution.
