Kenya vs Tanzania Safari — Which is Better?

Kenya vs Tanzania Safari — Which Country Should You Choose?

Kenya and Tanzania together form the greatest safari ecosystem on earth — the Serengeti-Mara, a shared landscape that hosts the Great Migration. But they offer quite different safari experiences. Here is Visit Horn of Africa’s honest comparison.

The Great Migration — Who Wins?

The wildebeest follow the rains in a circuit between the two countries. The dramatic Mara River crossings (the most photographed moment) happen in the Maasai Mara (Kenya) between July and October. The calving season (equally dramatic — lions hunting newborn wildebeest) happens in the Serengeti (Tanzania) between January and March. Both countries win — at different times of year.

Big Five Comparison

  • Kenya: Excellent lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo. Rhino at Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
  • Tanzania: Ngorongoro Crater has the densest large mammal concentration on earth including black rhino.

Value

  • Kenya: Generally more affordable park fees and accommodation
  • Tanzania: Higher park fees but Ngorongoro and Serengeti justify the cost

Our Recommendation

July–October: Kenya (Mara River crossings). January–March: Tanzania (calving season). Year-round: combine both for the complete experience. Visit Horn of Africa operates both — contact us to plan your perfect safari.
