Yemen & Socotra — What’s Accessible Now?

Yemen is home to one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited civilisations — the ancient Sabaean kingdom, the legendary Queen of Sheba, mudbrick skyscraper cities of the Hadhramaut, and the UNESCO-listed Old City of Sana’a. Due to ongoing conflict on the Yemeni mainland, Visit Horn of Africa currently operates Socotra Island exclusively — accessible via Abu Dhabi, entirely separate from the mainland conflict. We monitor mainland Yemen closely for future operations as conditions allow.

🏝️ SOCOTRA ISLAND — OPEN NOW (October–May)

Dragon’s Blood Trees • Hoq Cave • Qalansiyah Lagoon • Pristine beaches • Zero light pollution

Access: Fly Abu Dhabi → Socotra Airport (SCT). VHA arranges all logistics.

About Yemen — Heritage & Future Travel

Yemen’s mainland hosts extraordinary civilisational heritage that will become accessible to tourism again as conditions allow:

  • Old Sana’a (UNESCO): Extraordinary mudbrick tower houses rising 6–9 storeys, decorated with white plasterwork and stained glass. One of the world’s oldest and most beautiful cities.
  • Shibam — Manhattan of the Desert: 500-year-old mudbrick skyscrapers rising 5–9 storeys from the Hadhramaut desert. UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sometimes called the world’s oldest skyscraper city.
  • Marib — Ancient Sabaean Kingdom: Ruins of ancient Marib — capital of the Sabaean kingdom, home of the Queen of Sheba. Ancient dam (8th century BCE), temple of Awwam (Bilqis Temple).
  • Wadi Dawan: Ancient canyon settlements with extraordinary mud tower architecture clinging to canyon walls.

Socotra Island — The World’s Most Alien Island

Socotra Island is one of the world’s most biodiverse places — 37% of its plant species exist nowhere else on earth. The Dragon’s Blood Tree has become the defining symbol of Socotra’s extraordinary alien beauty. UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

Critical: Socotra is ONLY accessible October to May. The Indian Ocean monsoon (June–September) closes the island completely. For the complete Socotra guide, see our Socotra Island Travel Guide.
