Duration: 10 Days | Countries: Somaliland, Djibouti | Difficulty: Moderate
The perfect Horn of Africa double — combine Somaliland’s ancient rock art and frontier culture with Djibouti’s alien geology, salt lakes, and whale shark encounters.
Days 1–5 follow the Somaliland Classic 5-Day itinerary: Hargeisa, Laas Geel, Berbera, Sheikh, Hargeisa.
Drive from Hargeisa to the Djibouti border at Loyada (approximately 3 hours). Cross border, continue to Djibouti City. Check in to hotel. Afternoon orientation walk along the waterfront.
Full-day geological tour: Lake Assal (−155m, Africa’s lowest point and world’s third-lowest land surface, 10x saltier than the ocean), Ardoukoba Volcano (active rift zone where African and Arabian tectonic plates separate), and the black lava fields of the Rift Valley.
Full-day excursion to Lac Abbé — the extraordinary limestone chimney landscape rising up to 50 metres from the lake floor. Flamingos, steam vents, and a sunrise that makes the chimneys glow orange. Planet of the Apes filming location.
November–February: Whale shark snorkelling in the Gulf of Tadjoura. March–October: Day Forest National Park (endemic juniper forest) and Gulf of Tadjoura beaches.
Morning at leisure. Djibouti City market. Depart from Djibouti–Ambouli International Airport.
