Maasai Mara — Great Migration

Maasai Mara — Kenya’s Greatest Wildlife Reserve

The Maasai Mara is Kenya’s most famous wildlife reserve and the Kenyan component of the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. It is home to the Big Five year-round and hosts the dramatic Mara River crossings of the Great Migration between July and October — the most photographed wildlife event on earth.

The Great Migration

Over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, and 400,000 gazelle migrate in a circuit between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. The Mara River crossings (July–October) are the most dramatic phase — enormous herds plunge into crocodile-infested waters in a chaotic mass crossing that draws photographers from around the world.

Big Five Year-Round

The Mara has excellent lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino populations. Cheetah sightings are particularly reliable in the open savanna.
