Danakil Depression — The Hottest Place on Earth

The Danakil Depression is one of the most extreme environments on earth — sitting 120 metres below sea level, with average annual temperatures exceeding 34°C. It is considered by some geologists to be the cradle of life on earth, where some of the oldest hominid fossils have been discovered. The active Erta Ale volcano hosts one of the world’s only permanent lava lakes — a churning pool of molten rock visible from the crater rim overnight.

The Dallol hydrothermal field creates neon yellow and green mineral formations unlike anything else on the planet — a surreal chemical landscape of acid pools and salt pillars.
