Why Visit Tanzania?

Tanzania is the gold standard of African safari — a country where the wildlife spectacle, landscape scale, and conservation quality combine to produce something unavailable anywhere else on earth. The Serengeti ecosystem hosts the world’s largest remaining overland migration of large mammals. The Ngorongoro Crater contains the world’s highest density of large mammals within a single enclosed geographical area. Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest summit. And Zanzibar’s UNESCO Stone Town and white sand beaches complete a Tanzania experience of extraordinary breadth.

Geography & Climate

Tanzania is East Africa’s largest country — 945,087 km². The northern safari circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Manyara) is centred on Arusha at the base of Kilimanjaro. June–October is the dry season — best overall for game viewing. December–March is calving season — extraordinary predator activity and green landscapes.

Top Places to Visit in Tanzania

Serengeti National Park

Africa’s most celebrated wildlife area. The annual wildebeest migration — over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, 400,000 gazelle — is the world’s greatest wildlife spectacle. Also Africa’s premier big cat destination — lion, cheetah, and leopard in extraordinary density.

Ngorongoro Crater

The world’s largest intact caldera — 260 km² of floor, 600m walls. The crater floor supports approximately 30,000 large mammals in permanent residence: 70+ lions, 7,000+ elephants, 500+ black rhino, and enormous hippo populations. A single day can produce all Big Five in one drive — the world’s most reliable wildlife viewing concentration.

Tarangire National Park

East Africa’s most underrated major park — enormous elephant herds among ancient baobab trees. Rare fringe-eared oryx, gerenuk, and greater kudu. Spectacular dry-season wildlife concentrations July–October.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Africa’s highest peak at 5,895m — also the world’s highest free-standing mountain. No technical climbing required — the Lemosho route (7–8 days) achieves the summit by fit non-climbers with good acclimatisation. The view from Uhuru at dawn is one of Africa’s great experiences.

Zanzibar

UNESCO Stone Town — the former capital of the Omani Sultanate’s East African empire, a labyrinth of coral stone alleys, carved doorways, and the scent of cloves and cardamom. North and east coast beaches (Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje) rival the Maldives.

Things to Do in Tanzania

  • Follow the wildebeest migration circuit (season-dependent)
  • Full-day drive in Ngorongoro Crater — aim for all Big Five
  • Dawn hot air balloon over the Serengeti plains
  • Track black rhino on foot in Ngorongoro (special permit)
  • Elephant watching in Tarangire’s baobab landscape
  • Summit Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho route (7–8 days)
  • Spice tour in Zanzibar interior
  • Visit Olduvai Gorge — “Cradle of Mankind” fossil site
  • Sunset dhow cruise from Stone Town
  • Snorkel at Mnemba Atoll coral reef off Zanzibar

Best Time to Visit Tanzania

June–October: Dry Season. Peak season. Wildlife concentrates at water sources. Migration in northern Serengeti July–October. Ngorongoro excellent year-round.

December–March: Calving Season. Wildebeest calving on southern Serengeti plains. Extraordinary predator activity. Green landscapes, photogenic light, fewer tourists.

April–May: Long Rains. Some roads impassable but dramatically lower prices. Still viable for Ngorongoro.

Visa & Entry Requirements

Apply for Tanzania e-Visa at eservices.immigration.go.tz. Cost: $50 USD. East African Community Tourist Visa ($100, covers Tanzania + Uganda + Kenya) is excellent value.

Safety & Security

Tanzania’s tourist areas are safe and well-managed. Northern safari circuit (Arusha, Serengeti, Ngorongoro) is extremely safe with excellent infrastructure. Zanzibar is safe with standard coastal precautions. VHA partners with vetted, licensed Tanzanian operators.

Getting There — Flights & Transport

Fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for northern circuit. Julius Nyerere International (DAR) for Dar es Salaam. Zanzibar (ZNZ) has direct flights from Nairobi. Excellent domestic connections via Coastal Aviation to all park airstrips.

Accommodation

Serengeti (luxury): Singita Grumeti, &Beyond Klein’s Camp, Four Seasons Serengeti. Ngorongoro: &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Entamanu Ngorongoro. Zanzibar: The Residence Zanzibar, Zuri Zanzibar.

Food & Cuisine

Tanzanian cuisine centres on ugali (maize porridge) with accompanying stews of meat, fish, or vegetables. Zanzibari cuisine is extraordinary — pilau rice spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves; fresh seafood in coconut sauce; and Zanzibar pizza (unique island street food). Arusha has an excellent international restaurant scene.

Culture & Local Customs

Tanzania has 130 ethnic groups united by Swahili as the national lingua franca. The Maasai straddle the Kenya-Tanzania border. Zanzibar’s culture is distinctly Swahili-Arab — Omani rule (1698–1964) is visible in architecture, cuisine, and dress.

Photography Guide

The Serengeti at dawn — golden light across endless plains, cheetah on a termite mound, lions with cubs — is one of the world’s great wildlife photography environments. Ngorongoro: the crater rim looking down over wildlife below, black rhino at close range. Kilimanjaro: the summit at dawn as the mountain’s shadow extends across the clouds below. Invest in a dust-proof camera system for Serengeti dry season.

Packing Guide

  • Neutral safari clothing (khaki, olive, grey)
  • Warm layer for Ngorongoro Crater (cold mornings at 2,300m rim)
  • Kilimanjaro gear if summiting: down jacket, thermal base layers, trekking poles
  • Binoculars 8×42 or 10×42
  • Malaria prophylaxis (prescription)
  • Yellow fever certificate (required if arriving from endemic country)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to go on safari in Tanzania?

June–October is the dry season — best overall for game viewing. August–September for migration in northern Serengeti. December–February for calving season predator action and green landscapes.

Can I see all Big Five in Ngorongoro Crater?

Yes — Ngorongoro Crater has the world’s most reliable Big Five concentration. Lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and black rhino are all resident. A single day drive should produce all five.

How difficult is climbing Kilimanjaro?

Kilimanjaro requires fitness and acclimatisation, not technical climbing skill. The Lemosho route (7–8 days) provides the best acclimatisation profile. Altitude sickness is the main risk — slow ascent is the key.
