Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda protects the Rwandan sector of the Virunga Massif — the chain of extinct and dormant volcanoes straddling Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo that is home to the mountain gorilla. Rwanda has 12 habituated gorilla families and offers the most premium gorilla trekking experience available.
Rwanda’s gorilla permit costs $1,500 USD — higher than Uganda’s $800 — but the experience is often considered more accessible: shorter trek times on average, world-class lodge accommodation nearby, and Rwanda’s security track record makes it the most comfortable option. Kigali is just 2.5 hours from the park.
Volcanoes National Park is where primatologist Dian Fossey conducted her famous gorilla research at Karisoke Research Centre. The park and Rwanda’s gorilla conservation programme are, in part, a legacy of her work.
