The Diksam Plateau in central Socotra (300–1,500m elevation) is the primary habitat of the Dragon’s Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari) — Socotra’s most iconic endemic species. The tree’s distinctive umbrella-shaped canopy evolved to maximise moisture capture from the summer monsoon fog. The blood-red resin — “dragon’s blood” — has been traded since antiquity for use in dyes, varnish, incense, and medicine.
Walking through a Diksam Dragon’s Blood forest is unlike any experience on earth. The trees’ otherworldly silhouettes against Socotra’s blue sky, combined with their extraordinary density on the plateau, create a landscape that looks like science fiction.
The Diksam Plateau also has the Desert Rose (Adenium obesum socotranum), cucumber tree (Dendrosicyos socotranus), and dozens of other plant species found nowhere else on earth.
