Laas Geel — Neolithic Cave Paintings, Somaliland

Laas Geel is a complex of rock art caves located 55km east of Hargeisa, in the Somaliland region of northern Somalia. It contains some of the earliest known cave paintings in Africa, dating from approximately 10,000–5,000 BCE — among the best preserved Neolithic art on the continent.

About Laas Geel

The name “Laas Geel” means “watering hole for camels” in Somali. The site consists of a series of granite overhangs sheltering vivid polychrome paintings depicting cattle with decorated hides, humans in ceremonial dress, and other animals. The pigments — ochre, white, and charcoal — have survived thousands of years due to the protective overhang and dry Horn of Africa climate.

Why It Matters

Laas Geel was unknown to the international world until a French archaeological team documented it in 2002. The site is considered a near-certain future UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite its extraordinary cultural significance, it remains largely unknown to international travellers — making it one of Africa’s most remarkable and uncrowded archaeological experiences.

Visiting Laas Geel

October to April. Avoid June to August (extreme heat).
