Duration: 3 Days | Countries: Somaliland | Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
The perfect introduction to Somaliland — capital orientation, the famous Laas Geel rock art caves, and an optional Berbera coast day trip. Ideal for travellers with limited time who want the Somaliland highlights.
Arrive at Hargeisa Egal International Airport. Transfer to hotel. Afternoon city orientation: MiG war memorial (a Soviet fighter jet mounted on a plinth — Somaliland’s independence symbol), the Hargeisa camel market on Holhol Road, National Museum, and the vibrant evening restaurant scene on Jigjiga Yasl Road. Welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
Early morning drive to Laas Geel (55km east of Hargeisa, approximately 1 hour). Full guided tour of the rock art caves — among the best-preserved Neolithic cave paintings in Africa, dating to 10,000–5,000 BCE. Depictions of cattle, humans, and animals in vivid polychrome red, white, and orange pigments. Picnic lunch on site. Return to Hargeisa in the afternoon. Free evening.
Option A: Drive to Berbera (180km, approximately 2.5 hours) — visit the colonial Ottoman and British port architecture, Berbera beach on the Gulf of Aden (swimming October–April), and fresh seafood lunch. Return to Hargeisa for departure flight.
Option B: Morning at leisure in Hargeisa — camel market, currency exchange district (open-air stacks of Somaliland shillings), local craft shopping. Afternoon departure.
